In a surprising turn of events, the StarTimes Uganda Premier League fixture between Wakiso Giants and Express FC has been rescheduled to Friday, November 17, 2023. The decision comes after a series of unforeseen circumstances and controversies surrounding the original fixture.
Initially, the UPL secretariat had set the match for Sunday, November 19, following the lifting of the suspension on Express FC fixtures. This suspension was imposed in the aftermath of an unfortunate incident that occurred after the 1-1 draw between Express FC and UPDF, where alleged Express FC fans attacked Assistant Referee Fahad Sekayuba.
However, Wakiso Giants, the home team for the upcoming clash, brought an unexpected twist to the scheduling. In a letter addressed to the UPL secretariat, Wakiso Giants notified that the original venue, Kabaka Kyabaggu, had already been booked for another activity on Sunday, forcing them to request an earlier date for the match.
“The UPL secretariat has received a letter from Wakiso Giants notifying us that at the venue for the said match, Kabaka Kyabaggu, was earlier booked for another activity and requested the match to be brought forward,” read a statement from UPL.
This rescheduling adds another layer of complexity to an already tumultuous series of events surrounding the fixture. Originally slated for November 11, the match had to be postponed due to sanctions against Express FC. The sanctions were a result of the attack on Assistant Referee Fahad Sekayuba, leading to the suspension of all Express FC matches.
In a recent development, two suspects linked to the attack have been apprehended and paraded in court. Noah Mukenya and Sulaiman Zimula faced legal proceedings on Tuesday, with their case adjourned to November 28. Both individuals have been remanded to Luzira Prison pending further investigations.
