A 15-year-old pupil, Clinton Birungi of Kyentija Primary School, tragically died in Kameme Cell, Kibimbiri Parish, Kihihi Sub County, Kanungu District, after a stray elephant attacked his home in the early hours of Thursday, May 16, 2025, at approximately 5:00 AM.
According to police reports, a mother elephant and its calf wandered out of Queen Elizabeth National Park and entered the residence of Kiiza Robert while the family was asleep.
The stray elephants proceeded to destroy the grass-thatched house, causing panic among the sleeping occupants. While most of the family members remained still, young Clinton Birungi attempted to flee the разрушение and was fatally struck by the elephant during the ensuing chase.
Local police from Kihihi swiftly responded to the scene of the tragic incident. They conducted an initial assessment and transported the deceased’s body to Kihihi Health Centre for a postmortem examination.
Residents reported that the same elephants had been roaming within the community for nearly a week prior to this deadly encounter.
Following the attack, officials from the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) intervened and successfully drove the animals back into the confines of Queen Elizabeth National Park for appropriate management and monitoring.
Authorities have confirmed that investigations into the circumstances surrounding this tragic incident are currently underway.
