Deputy Speaker of Parliament of Uganda, Thomas Tayebwa, has been elected to represent East Africa in the OACP-EU Parliamentary General Assembly. His appointment comes after his successful election during the 64th session of the OACPS Parliamentary Assembly and Constitutive Sessions of the OACPS-EU Joint Parliamentary Assemblies in Luanda, Angola, on February 17, 2024.
Tayebwa’s new role entails representing East Africa in the Organization of African, Caribbean, and Pacific States (OACPS) – European Union General Assembly, signifying a significant diplomatic responsibility for the region.
Upon the announcement of his election, Tayebwa’s achievement has garnered excitement and commendation within political circles in Uganda, with several personalities expressing their support and congratulations on social media platforms.
Speaker of Parliament of Uganda, Anita Among, conveyed her congratulations and admiration for Tayebwa’s election, emphasizing his firm Pan-African credentials and commitment to the African cause.
In response, Tayebwa expressed gratitude for the trust placed in him and affirmed his dedication to the responsibilities of his new role. He acknowledged the support received from colleagues and emphasized his commitment to representing East Africa effectively in engagements with the European Parliament.
Additionally, Ambassador Paul Emoru, Uganda’s High Commissioner to Pretoria, South Africa, extended well wishes to Tayebwa, expressing confidence in his ability to foster collaboration and development between East Africa and the EU.
