Thousands Displaced as River Kafu Bursts its Banks in Masindi District

The Ankole Times

River  Kafu River has burst its banks, causing widespread flooding in the Mengo sub-county of Masindi district. As a result, thousands of residents from five villages – Kimengo, Myeba, Kayera Kafu Kayebe, and Kibanja – have been forced to flee their homes.

The floodwaters have wreaked havoc on the region, submerging homes, destroying livestock, and ruining crops. With their homes rendered uninhabitable, residents have been compelled to seek shelter at the sub-county headquarters, religious institutions, and schools.

Masindi district chairman Cosmas Byaruhanga has acknowledged the severity of the situation, emphasizing the district’s limited resources to respond effectively to the disaster.

Travelers Advised to Take Alternative Routes

In light of the floodwaters obstructing a section of the main road connecting Kampala to Hoima, travelers are strongly advised to seek alternative routes. Uganda National Roads Authority (UNRA) has recommended two primary detours:

  • Hoima – Masindi – Kafu – Luwero – Kampala Route: This route provides a safer alternative for those traveling from Kampala to Hoima, bypassing the affected area.

  • Hoima – Buhimba – Nalweyo – Kakumiro – Mubende – Kampala Route: This route offers another option for motorists traveling from Kampala to Hoima while avoiding the flooded section.

For light vehicles traveling from Kampala, a detour is available via the Masode – Ntwetwe – Nkooko – Nalweyo – Hoima Road.

UNRA urges all road users to avoid attempting to cross flooded road sections, emphasizing the inherent dangers involved.

Ongoing Efforts to Address Flooding and Restore Normal Travel Conditions

Local authorities and disaster response teams are actively monitoring the situation and implementing measures to address the flooding and restore normal travel conditions. Motorists and commuters are advised to exercise caution, adhere to recommended alternative routes, and stay informed about the latest developments.

The current flooding situation in Masindi district highlights the need for effective disaster preparedness and response mechanisms to mitigate the impact of such events and ensure the well-being of affected communities.
