The Uganda National Roads Authority (UNRA) has begun clearing floating vegetation that has accumulated under the Pakwach bridge over the past two weeks. This initiative, which commenced on Saturday, aims to alleviate obstruction and restore smooth movement across the bridge.
Addressing the press in Pakwach on Monday, UNRA’s media relations manager, Allan Ssempebwa, highlighted the significance of this operation in safeguarding the integrity of the bridge. He emphasized the importance of preventing potential damage that could compromise the vital link between West Nile and other parts of the country.
Ssempebwa attributed the accumulation of vegetation to rising water levels in the area. He noted similar occurrences in other parts of the country, such as the Obongi ferry docking area, where floating vegetation has caused disruptions.
Local fisherman Denis Cwinyai described the impact of the vegetation on their daily activities. He explained that while the presence of floating vegetation has increased their fish catch, it has also hindered the Fisheries Protection Unit (FPU) from conducting their operations effectively.
Cwinyai expressed concerns about the economic implications for fishermen and appealed to the government to reduce FPU operations to help them sustain their families during challenging economic times.
In response, Ssempebwa issued a warning to locals, urging them to cease fishing activities due to associated risks. He highlighted the dangers posed by the combination of speeding vehicles and fishing under the bridge, emphasizing the need for safety precautions.
UNRA intends to enforce measures to prevent fishermen from carrying out activities under the bridge due to the increasing risks posed by passing vehicles. This action aims to ensure the safety of both motorists and fishermen alike.
