(Entebbe) – The Uganda Civil Aviation Authority (UCAA) has announced a significant increase in parking fees at Entebbe International Airport. The new charges, which will take effect on November 1, 2024, represent the first revision in 15 years, as the last adjustment was made in 2009.
According to a press statement released by the UCAA on October 21, 2024, the revision is part of efforts to improve the passenger experience at the airport. The new rates will affect both short-term and long-term parking at the airport.
For short term parking, the first hour fee for saloon cars and station wagons will be set at 5,000 shillings, the same as the current rate, while vans and minibuses will pay 8,000 shillings. Larger vehicles such as lorries and buses will be charged 10,000 shillings for the first hour. After the first hour, all vehicles will incur an additional fee of 1,000 shillings for every extra hour parked.
Table 1: Short Term Parking Charges
Vehicle Type | First-Hour Charge (UGX) | Additional Charge (Per Hour) |
---|---|---|
Saloon Cars/Station Wagons | 5,000 | 1,000 |
Vans/Minibuses | 8,000 | 1,000 |
Lorries/Buses | 10,000 | 1,000 |
For long-term parking, the initial daily charge will be 30,000 shillings, and each additional day will cost 10,000 shillings. However, for vehicles parked for more than 30 days, the rate will increase to 200,000 shillings per day. The UCAA advises that the recommended maximum duration for parking in the long-term section is 30 days.
Table 2: Long-Term Parking Charges
Duration | Charge (UGX) |
---|---|
First Day | 30,000 |
Subsequent Days | 10,000 per day |
After 30 Days | 200,000 per day |
In the press statement, UCAA spokesperson Vianney Luggya said that the fee adjustment was necessary to accommodate ongoing upgrades at the airport aimed at improving facilities and services for passengers. He noted that more detailed information on the revised charges, including special rates for frequent users, would be available on the UCAA’s official website and social media platforms.
This adjustment comes after a long period of stable parking fees, with the last revision implemented on October 1, 2009. Back then, the initial rate for short term parking was 2,000 shillings for the first hour for saloon cars and station wagons, and long-term parking was priced at 5,000 shillings per day. The current increase in both short- and long-term parking charges marks a significant shift as part of the airport’s broader improvement strategy.
For travelers parking for shorter periods, the new minimum charge for saloon cars of 5,000 shillings represents a noticeable increase from the previous 2,000 shillings, reflecting more than double the original cost. Similarly, long-term parking has seen a significant increase, with the first-day fee rising to 30,000 shillings and each additional day costing 10,000 shillings. Vehicles parked for over 30 days will face a steep fee of 200,000 shillings per day.
UCAA has claimed these revisions are part of broader efforts to enhance Entebbe International Airport’s infrastructure and services, ensuring it meets the needs of the growing number of passengers using the airport.
The UCAA has promised that detailed information on parking charges and new rates will be readily accessible to the public on its digital platforms.
