(Sydney) - Qantas has issued an apology following the unintended screening of a mature-rated film to all passengers, including families with young children, on a recent Sydney to Tokyo flight.

(Sydney) – During the flight, the in-flight entertainment system experienced a technical fault before take-off, preventing passengers from accessing individual movie selections. Unable to resolve the issue, the crew delayed the flight for over an hour before finally taking off, with a decision to play a single film for all screens. Passengers soon found themselves watching the mature-rated film Daddio, which contains explicit material, including nudity and graphic discussions on sex and relationships.

The film, which stars Sean Penn and Dakota Johnson, has an 18+ rating in the UK for language, sexual content, and nudity, is rated R in the US, and carries an MA15+ classification in Australia. Passengers were reportedly unable to turn off, pause, or dim their individual screens, making it difficult for those wishing to avoid the content.

One passenger described the experience on Reddit as “extremely inappropriate,” noting that explicit text messages were visible without headphones. The individual added, “It took almost an hour of this before they switched to a more kid friendly movie, but it was super uncomfortable for everyone, especially with families and kids onboard.” They questioned how such an incident could happen on a major airline.

Following complaints, Qantas switched the film to a family friendly option. In a statement issued after the incident, Qantas acknowledged that the film was “clearly not suitable to play for the whole flight” and apologized for the experience. The airline confirmed that the film was changed and added that its standard practice in such cases is to switch to family friendly content when individual movie choices are unavailable. Qantas has since launched a review to determine how the selection of Daddio occurred.
