On Thursday, May 2nd, police in Kampala took custody of 93 vehicles seized during various operations.
Authorities attribute the impoundments to owners who installed illegal sirens, roof lights, and modified lights on their vehicles. Additionally, some motorists were found to have violated one-way traffic rules.
The operation involved law enforcement officers from multiple stations in Kampala and Wakiso, including Wandegeya, Katwe, Kabalagala, Kajjansi, Kawempe, Jinja Road, Kiira Division, Kiira Road, and Central Police Station.
Michael Kananura, spokesperson for the Directorate of Traffic and Road Safety, revealed that following the impoundment of vehicles, police recorded statements from the drivers. These drivers are expected to appear in court in accordance with the provisions outlined in the Traffic and Road Safety Act of 1998.
Kananura issued a public warning to drivers and vehicle owners in violation, urging them to promptly comply and remove the unauthorized modifications. He emphasized that such operations will persist until all vehicles in contravention are addressed.
Furthermore, the spokesperson’s office circulated several photographs depicting the impounded vehicles. The impoundments were primarily due to illegal sirens, roof lights, modified lights, and violations of one-way traffic rules.
Statements of the drivers have been recorded, and they will appear in court as per the provisions of The Traffic & Road Safety Act 1998, as variously amended. These operations will continue until all such vehicles are addressed.
Therefore, the police are cautioning all drivers and owners of vehicles in the aforementioned categories to comply and remove them before facing impoundment.
