The rehabilitation of Karuma Bridge is nearing completion, with significant progress reported by the Uganda National Roads Authority (UNRA), promising enhanced connectivity for regional transport.

(Kampala) – The Uganda National Roads Authority (UNRA) has provided an update on the progress of the rehabilitation of Karuma Bridge, announcing that the construction of a new concrete deck is well underway. The project, which is vital for both local and regional traffic, is expected to significantly enhance the durability and resilience of this key infrastructure.

Eng. Lawrence Pario, head of bridges and structures at UNRA, reported that the formwork installation is nearly 80% complete, marking a significant milestone in the project. He stated, “Following the demolition of the old concrete deck, the new deck casting exercise is ongoing.” Pario further explained that after completing the formwork, steel beams will be placed, followed by concrete casting. The bridge is anticipated to reopen before Christmas.

The Karuma Bridge is a critical transport link, connecting northern Uganda to the rest of the country. Once reopened, it will provide safer and more efficient movement for both travelers and freight transporters, fostering connectivity and promoting economic growth across the region.

Originally built in 1962, the Karuma Bridge had already surpassed its intended lifespan by over a decade when major structural defects were discovered earlier this year. In May, the government made the decision to close the bridge to heavy vehicles, including buses, trucks, and trailers, to allow engineers to conduct repairs. This closure was initially expected to last three months.

However, upon further assessment, it became clear that a nearly total overhaul of the bridge was necessary to restore its functionality. The repairs involved fixing the major supporting structures and removing and refurbishing the entire surface of the bridge.

During the closure of Karuma Bridge, traffic has been diverted to Murchison Falls National Park, which has affected local transport patterns. UNRA’s commitment to timely and safe delivery of this project underscores the authority’s dedication to improving Uganda’s infrastructure.

The reopening of Karuma Bridge is highly anticipated by both transporters and local residents, especially with the festive season approaching, as it is expected to ease travel and enhance accessibility in the region.
