Masindi District authorities are grappling with a financial challenge as they endeavor to repair the vital Tantara Bridge in Buruli County. The deteriorating state of the bridge has significantly impacted transportation, posing hardships for residents and hindering the movement of agricultural produce.
Initially budgeted at Shs1 billion for repairs, it became evident that this allocation would fall short of the necessary funds. The district now requires approximately Shs4 billion to undertake comprehensive reconstruction efforts that ensure the longevity of the bridge.
Mr. Sunday Joseph, the acting engineer for Masindi District, emphasized the need for adequate funding to address the bridge’s structural issues. However, the district faces constraints due to insufficient funding in its budget.
Despite efforts to secure additional funding from the Ministry of Works and Transport, amounting to Shs3 billion, the district has yet to receive a response. This delay further prolongs the plight of residents and businesses reliant on the bridge for transportation purposes.
The dire condition of the Tantara Bridge has forced locals to resort to alternative, albeit costly, methods of transportation. With vehicles unable to traverse the bridge, residents have resorted to hiring casual laborers to transport goods, incurring additional expenses in the process.
Mr. Bogere Atugonza, a resident of Alimugonza village, highlighted the challenges faced by the community due to the bridge’s impassable state. He urged the government to expedite the repair process to alleviate the burdens faced by residents and restore vital transportation routes.
