Entebbe Municipality Mayor Fabrice Rulinda has welcomed the introduction of metro buses in Entebbe, emphasizing the positive impact they will have on the local transport system. He acknowledged that the lack of affordable transportation had been a significant challenge in Entebbe, particularly after Tondeka buses ceased operations.

The bustling activity around Entebbe International Airport and Nakiwogo landing site has created a high demand for accessible and reliable transportation options. Addressing this need, Mayor Rulinda expressed gratitude for the arrival of metro buses, which are expected to alleviate the existing transport challenges.

During the launch of the buses on April 19, 2024, Mayor Rulinda highlighted the long-standing struggle faced by Entebbe residents, especially when commuting from the airport to Kampala. He noted that while some transportation options existed, they were often costly and inefficient.

To address these challenges, Mayor Rulinda disclosed that Entebbe Municipality collaborated with the Ministry for Kampala and a private contractor, RentCo, which was already involved in the transport sector. This partnership resulted in Entebbe becoming the first recipient of 10 metro buses, each with a passenger capacity of 84 individuals.

Mayor Rulinda expressed hope that the residents of Entebbe and commuters would embrace the new transport initiative. He envisioned that its success in Entebbe could serve as a model for other regions across Uganda, potentially improving transport systems nationwide.

The introduction of metro buses comes in the wake of Tondeka buses suspending operations after three years, leaving many commuters stranded. State Minister for Kampala Capital City and Metropolitan Affairs, Kyofatogabye Kabuye, emphasized the need for more affordable, efficient, and reliable transportation options.

Minister Kyofatogabye highlighted the congestion and inefficiency prevalent in Uganda’s taxi system, underscoring the role of metro buses in alleviating these issues. By offering scheduled services from Entebbe Airport to Kampala, the metro buses aim to streamline transportation and save commuters valuable time.

RentCo’s Chief Executive Officer, Robert Nyasimi, highlighted the potential for job creation through the metro bus initiative. He emphasized that widespread adoption of the buses could lead to employment opportunities for many Ugandans, particularly as bus drivers.

The metro buses, distinguishable by their blue color and equipped with CCTV cameras, prioritize passenger safety and security. Additionally, security personnel will be onboard to safeguard commuters and their belongings during their journeys, ensuring a comfortable and secure travel experience.
