Steven Ariong, Moroto — The negative perceptions held by some members of the East African Community about Moroto, the mother district of Karamoja, were transformed on Wednesday by the newly renovated hotels in the municipality, which is preparing to receive city status in 2025.

Leaders who had never visited Moroto were stuck with outdated views, believing that finding accommodation in the town had been difficult for the past 12 years. However, they were amazed and left in disbelief to discover that Moroto municipality was far from the image they had in mind.

Peter Ekal, one of the leaders, remarked that what he had previously heard about Moroto was completely different after touring the impressive Hotel Strikers and other upcoming hotels. They were all left speechless.

The newly renovated Hotel Strikers has transformed the look of Moroto municipality, offering unique services that other hotels do not provide. The hotel features air conditioning, a gym, a soundproof club, and more, which left East African visitors impressed.

Mr. Ekal encouraged other visitors to explore Karamoja to see the new developments instead of relying on outdated information about Moroto and the region. “Imagine if I hadn’t traveled to attend a meeting in Moroto; my mind would still believe that Moroto and Karamoja are backward, with no accommodation. But I have seen a different Karamoja,” he said.

Mr. John Lojore suggested that more meetings on East African affairs should be held in Moroto to boost trade in the region. “We must organize a special East African tour in Karamoja and advocate for the East African Parliamentary sittings to be held here, so that a positive message about Karamoja can be communicated beyond our borders,” he said.
