Uganda dominated the recently concluded 13th Edition of the East African Community (EAC) Inter-parliamentary Games in Kigali, Rwanda, reaffirming its status as defending champions. The event, spanning two weeks from December 8, witnessed Uganda securing the highest number of medals among member states.
The Ugandan team, led by their 11th Parliament, clinched the overall victory, outshining neighboring Tanzania and Kenya, who secured the second and third positions, respectively.
Closing the event at the Kigali Conference and Exhibition Village, Uganda’s Deputy Speaker, Mr. Thomas Tayebwa, emphasized the importance of using sports as a unifying factor to strengthen ties among East African states. Mr. Tayebwa encouraged regional colleagues to incorporate sports into their lifestyles, highlighting its potential to alleviate stress, contribute to nation-building, and foster friendships.
Uganda’s outstanding performance in athletics contributed significantly to its overall success, amassing a total of 36 medals, including 23 gold, eight silver, and five bronze. The football team, captained by Mr. Moses Magogo, and the Golf team, led by Mr. Tayebwa, excelled in their respective categories. The football team maintained an unbeaten record, securing the maximum 15 points with an impressive goal difference.
The men’s basketball team, guided by Mr. Mwine Mpaka, claimed victory in their category, while the women’s team secured the second position, trailing behind Tanzania. Additionally, Uganda’s women’s volleyball team emerged victorious, while the netball team achieved a commendable second place, trailing behind Tanzania.
