Namusambia FC of Uganda in Obongi District and Loyal FC of South Sudan have qualified for the finals of the Uhuru football tournament as part of activities to mark the 61st independence anniversary celebrations in Obongi District. Namusambia FC of Uganda beat Soweto FC of South Sudan by 4-2, while Loyal FC beat Lamako FC of Uganda to qualify for the finals.
In the women’s football tournament, only South Sudanese football teams have qualified for the finals, and these two teams are Pillars FC and Zokati FC, respectively.
The Obongi independence tournament is sponsored by Sky Blue Club Management, based in Palorinya Sub-county, Obongi District.
The finals of the independence tournament will be played on 9th October 2023, on Monday at Belameling Vocational Playground in Obongi District, while the independence celebrations will be held on Friday, 13th October 2023, at Alingajobi Primary School Playground in Aliba Sub-county.
The Obongi District Independence Football Tournament sponsor, Sky Blue Club Management Executive Director Mr. Jimmy Marsuk, a businessman based in Palorinya Sub-county, while speaking during the competitions, said the target of the tournament is to unite South Sudanese refugees in Obongi District and the host community of Ugandans, identify talents among Ugandans and refugees in the district, as far as entertainment is concerned.
The RDC of Obongi District, Mr. Samuel Mpimbaza Hashaka, while speaking during the tournament at Palorinya Playground, thanked the Sky Blue Club Management for sponsoring the tournament and appealed to Ugandans and South Sudanese refugees to be united and continue staying together in harmony, promoting peace amongst themselves.
The 61st general celebration will take place on 9th October 2023 at Kitgum Municipality, where the chief guest will be H.E. Yoweri Museveni Kaguta, the President of the Republic of Uganda.
