Ugandan swimmer Husnah Kukundakwe, at just 16 years old, defies stereotypes and embraces challenges as she gears up for the upcoming Paris Games. Born with a right forearm absence and a left hand impairment, Kukundakwe discovered her love for swimming at the age of three. Despite initial reluctance from her mother, she not only overcame doubts but also triumphed over able-bodied swimmers, marking the beginning of her remarkable journey.

Kukundakwe’s journey took an unexpected turn when, at 11, she visited Kenya and interacted with other disabled athletes. The experience spurred her determination to compete on a global stage. Securing the necessary certifications, attending a swimming camp in South Korea, and participating in the World Para Swimming World Series in Singapore paved the way for her qualification for the Tokyo Games.

The COVID-19 pandemic disrupted her preparation, leading to improvised training methods such as jogging and virtual swimming lessons. Despite facing Paralympics legends in Tokyo, Kukundakwe achieved a personal best time in the SB8 100m breaststroke, describing the experience as “amazing” and “nerve-wracking.”

Beyond her athletic achievements, Kukundakwe aims to inspire young Ugandans, especially those with disabilities. In a country where disability stigma persists, she believes her success is changing perceptions. As a youth ambassador for the International Paralympics Committee, she sees signs of a positive shift, with people welcoming her back as a professional swimmer rather than focusing on her disability.

Despite the challenges, Kukundakwe is determined to continue breaking barriers. Training for the Paris Games, she envisions participating in the 2028 Los Angeles Games. However, her ultimate dream extends beyond swimming; she aspires to become a pediatrician, emphasizing that her love for swimming is a stepping stone toward broader goals.
