Uganda and Africa are quietly losing a vital asset, the donkey; Uganda’s EALA Representative, Hon. Veronica Babirye, moves a motion to safeguard donkeys.
During the just concluded East African Legislative Assembly sitting that took place in Uganda, a member of the Assembly from Uganda, Hon. Veronica Babirye Kadogo, moved a motion to safeguard donkeys in East Africa and Africa at large.
Hon. Veronica reiterated that donkeys have been prestigious animals for many communities in Africa, but are now nearing extinction.
“For over a decade, East Africa and Africa have been rapidly and quietly losing one of their vital assets, the donkey, an animal that for centuries has been a lifeline for millions of household activities, providing transport, water access, agriculture, and trade,” Hon. Veronica emphasized.
Babirye further argued that the high and unsustainable demand for donkey skins, used in Chinese traditional medicine, Ejiao, has pushed these animals to the brink of extinction.
The motion, which initially came as a surprise to the legislators, was later supported by the entire House after further expounding.
Members commended Uganda’s EALA representative, Hon. Veronica Babirye Kadogo, for her bold and visionary leadership in moving the motion to safeguard East Africa’s treasured animal.
