Umukuka to Tour Masabaland Schools

The Umukuka of the Bamasaba cultural institution (Inzu y’amasaba), His Highness Jude Mike Mudoma, is set to tour all schools in Masabaland this year. This was revealed by the spokesperson of the Bamasaba cultural institution, Mr. Steven Masiga, who accompanied the Umukuka on an inaugural visit to Nyondo Senior Secondary School on Friday, October 11.

The Umukuka, who was invited by the headteacher, Mr. Dismus Wandulu, encouraged the students to each plant a tree at home as a way of conserving the environment. He also advised the learners to regularly deworm themselves and prayed for the success of all students in the upcoming UCE and UACE exams, scheduled for October and November.

Mr. Steven Masiga, while speaking to the Ankole Times, stated that Nyondo Senior Secondary School is the first secondary school to be visited by His Highness the Umukuka. He added that they intend to visit all schools in Masabaland, whether government or private, primary or secondary, including universities. The goal is to encourage the Bamasaba to take advantage of the learning opportunities provided by the government.

“We will provide educational tips to learners and teachers, including advising them to distance themselves from any negativities that hinder learning, such as the use of prohibited substances like narcotics. As a cultural institution, we are listened to very well, and we will use our influence to eliminate anything detrimental to learning,” Masiga concluded.

Additionally, they will use these visits to outline circumcision timetables, ensuring that students are aware of the Imbalu schedule. For those in school, the circumcision timetable is typically set for December in every even year, while non-school-going candidates have their circumcision in August of every even year.

The Umukuka is tasked with encouraging his people to participate in government programs, family well-being, and general development agendas. The headmaster of Nyondo Senior Secondary School, Mr. Dismus Wandulu, emphasized the importance of these visits, suggesting that the Umukuka should tour schools across Masabaland to inspire the youth.

The Umukuka was accompanied by the Minister for Culture, Hon. Kutoi Moses; Hon. Wambede Richard, the Minister in Charge of the Umukuka’s Office; and Mr. Steven Masiga, the spokesperson. The spokesperson for the Uganda Police, Mr. Rogers, also accompanied the Umukuka to Nyondo Senior Secondary School.
