A total of 797,444 candidates from 14,883 centres (schools) sat for these exams as per UNEB’s official records. This is in contrast of the 749,347 candidates in 2023. 524,025 accounting for 65.7% from the the total number of candidates were Universal Primary Education (UPE) beneficiaries. The UPE centers were 11,451 in number. Meanwhile 273,419 (34.3%) were from Non UPE schools and they accounted for 3,432 UNEB centers. There was also an improvement in the candidates with Special Needs Education (SNE) category.
While speaking at the ceremony, UNEB Chairperson Prof. Celestine Obua said that “the results show that the 2024 SNE candidates have also done well, especially the category of the deaf candidates who had appeared most disadvantaged in the previous years.”
In 2023, 44 per cent of candidates in this category were ungraded. This time the proportion is 23 percent, a big improvement. In the category of gender, there were more females who completed the PLE cycle than the males.
“In 2024, analysis by gender shows that 378,709 (47.5%) boys were registered compared to 418,750 (52.5%) girls, indicating that more girls than boys completed the Primary Education cycle. This has been the trend in recent years,” further said Obua.
Besides, the Board also registered 71 candidates from Uganda Government Upper Prison, Luzira (70 males and 1 female), and 37 from Mbarara Main Prison (all males).

A higher proportion of the 2024 candidates passed in Division 2 and above level. Overall, the performance of candidates is better than that of 2023. A higher proportion of the candidates passed (91.8%) compared to 2023 (88.0%).
There is a drop in the number of candidates obtaining Division 1.
Meanwhile UNEB said that a worrying development however, has been noticed in a few schools that are registering perfectly normal pupils to be recognized as special needs candidates. They are hiding under the category of Others; pupils that suffer from health conditions such as Asthma, Epilepsy and Sickle Cell anaemia. The
Board recognizes that such candidates may get attacks during the examination period.
However, those candidates do not require any specialized assistance, except extra time of 45 minutes allowed to them.
The errant schools have been
found to select their good pupils to benefit from the extra time.
The just released results will be uploaded on the examination centre Portals. Therefore each school can download their results as soon as they are officially released.
