PADER, Uganda – A jubilant and emotional atmosphere filled the 5th Infantry Division Headquarters in Acholpii today as the Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) officially retired 191 non-commissioned officers.
The retirees, who included four women, ranged in rank from Warrant Officer I to Private, marking the conclusion of a significant chapter in their military careers.
Addressing the retirees, Major General Keith Katungi, the 5th Infantry Division Commander, praised them for their years of sacrifice and unwavering dedication to national service.
“I acknowledge the sacrifice of the retirees and the many years they have served,” said Maj. Gen. Katungi. “This system is continuous, and it is through such service that Uganda remains free and safe—from Kisoro to Arua, from Lamwo to other parts of the country.”
Maj. Gen. Katungi also offered crucial advice, urging both serving soldiers and retirees to be mindful of their behavior and language, particularly within the current political climate. He emphasized the importance of financial planning and cautioned them to be wary of fraudsters. He reassured the retirees that they would continue to have access to UPDF services such as Wazalendo SACCO, education support, and medical care.
Colonel Elvis Kaliba, the Division Intelligence Officer, echoed these sentiments, applauding the retirees for their exemplary conduct and encouraging them to maintain discipline and good character within their civilian communities.
The Pader Resident District Commissioner (RDC), Mr. Amose Asiimwe, extended his appreciation for the retirees’ commitment and discipline. He advised them to prioritize their health, avoid drugs and alcohol, and build upon their existing investments to support their families and generate sustainable income.
Representing the brigade commanders, Lieutenant Colonel Christopher Nyero, Commander of the 509 Brigade, thanked the UPDF leadership for establishing a well-structured retirement program. “Retirement is a natural part of every career in service to the country,” he noted.
Hon. Okwir Ray, the Pader Sub-County LC5 Councilor, who represented the Pader District LC5 Chairperson, encouraged the retirees to carry forward the discipline and values they upheld while in uniform.
As the retirees marched out of the Division Quarter Guard for the final time, emotions ran high, with smiles, laughter, and heartfelt farewells filling the air.
The ceremony was attended by senior and junior officers of the 5th Division, as well as the families of the retirees. Captain Edrin Mawanda, the 5th Infantry Division Public Information Officer, commended the retirees for the discipline they exhibited throughout the colorful event.
