Five hundred soldiers from the Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) have concluded a nine-day training session on conducting the upcoming National Housing and Population Census. The training took place at Gaddafi Barracks in Jinja District and concluded today.

Dr. Chris Mukiza, the Executive Director of the Uganda National Bureau of Standards, expressed his approval of having UPDF officers trained as supervisors and enumerators for the census. He highlighted the practicality of having military personnel conduct the census within barracks, ensuring accurate counts of soldiers and their families, which might have been challenging for civilian UBOS officials to achieve.

Acknowledging the significance of the UPDF’s involvement, Dr. Mukiza emphasized the importance of counting every individual in the census, underscoring the inclusive nature of the national survey.

Brigadier General Ephraim Mugume, head of the UPDF census committee, outlined that participants were selected from various units and formations within the UPDF to serve as battalion supervisors and enumerators. He encouraged the soldiers to apply the knowledge gained during the training, aligning it with the ideological principles of the UPDF.

The National Housing and Population Census is scheduled to commence on May 10, 2024, and will continue for a duration of ten days. This significant undertaking aims to collect comprehensive data on the population, housing, and related demographic information across the country.
