Lira City NRM long-serving and hard-working cadre, Mr. Geoffrey Etwop, has vowed to become the engine of the NRM party in Lira City come 2026, by making a walkover to become the NRM Party chairman in the City of Lira during the forthcoming NRM primaries. He was addressing the media from Lira City on Wednesday morning about his aspirations, which have gained momentum by over 80 percent.

Geoffrey Etwop, the NRM serving cadre in the position of treasurer in Lira City, has made a call for unity among all Party members in Lira City and to vote for him as the NRM roadmap has been drawn.

Odongo Bodyguard, in an interview with our reporter on Wednesday, said he (Odongo Bodyguard) is the one currently serving as NRM Lira City chairperson. He said he is still firm in office but encouraged anyone who wants to contest or aspire for the position of Lira City NRM chairperson to do so because it is constitutionally allowed. He said he is not like Satan, who does not want anybody to replace his/her position; everyone should contest, and the final winner takes it all.

Adong Stella Night, the NRM flag bearer of Te-Obia Senior Quarters, Lira City East Division, Lira City, narrated that “for peace to prevail in Lira City, no one should carry two or three different positions because, even in meetings, allowance to such a person is paid for a single position.”

However, Honourable Awor Sarah Angweri, a senior NRM cadre who doubles as the Female Workers’ Representative in the Lira City Council, said, “The NRM party is a party which advocates for democracy; therefore, anyone is free to contest for any position he or she wishes.” She added that it is upon the party members to decide who can lead them in Lira City by voting for the best person with a clear manifesto.

The Lira City NRM party treasurer, Geoffrey Etwop, has shown interest in contesting for the position of National Resistance Movement (NRM) party chairperson (Lira City) to unite and resolve internal fights once and for all. Lira City businessman Geoffrey Etwop (Lira City Tycoon) made this political pronouncement on Wednesday afternoon, April 9, 2025, in an exclusive interview with The Ankole Times newspaper from Lira City.

According to Mr. Etwop, the infighting, segregation, and disunity among party members tarnish the party’s name, saying he has come to bridge that gap in Lira City NRM administration.

Hon Akello Lydia, the Lira City West Division NRM Youth League leader, challenged some aspirants for grabbing all the lower positions in NRM in Lira instead of going for the bigger ones. “I have no problem with anyone contesting, but in politics, no one is permanent in one position,” said Lydia Akello.

According to Mr. Etwop, “What is hindering Lira’s NRM progress is disunity within some party members, internal fights, among other things. As I come in to empower Lira City NRM supporters to reconcile and work as a team, I am ready to face any other aspirants for a healthy competition if the party is to continue developing,” Etwop stated.

He urged party members to cherish and embrace the NRM party ideology and vision, built around the four core principles of patriotism, Pan-Africanism, socio-economic transformation, and democracy, as always emphasized in the party policy by His Excellency the President of the Republic of Uganda, Gen. Yoweri Kaguta Museveni.

“I call upon those who are NRM subscribers to remain patriotic and support me. Go and rally behind me because I will be creative and innovative enough to build our NRM party, which is bigger than all of us,” he added.

Etwop also lauded the Lango sub-region NRM party leadership for their tremendous work, especially the construction of party offices and successfully recruiting opposition members to join the ruling NRM party. He emphasized the importance of voters understanding the roles of different political leaders, calling for unity of purpose as they elect new leaders without any intimidation from anybody come NRM party primaries in Lira City in the 2026 election.

Many people in the Lango sub-region and Northern Uganda know businessman Geoffrey Etwop as an influential, kind man of dignity, a social and vibrant NRM cadre who has mentored many people in the party as he serves as Lira City NRM party’s treasurer.
