Woman Drowns in Lake Bunyonyi: Kabale Police Launch Investigation

Kabale, Uganda – Police in Kabale are investigating the circumstances surrounding the drowning death of a 27-year-old woman in Lake Bunyonyi on Saturday night.

Elly Maate, Kigezi Region Police Spokesperson, identified the deceased as Hindu Mirembe, a resident of Kashaka-Nyabugando Village, Bubare Sub-County, Mbarara District.




The incident occurred on February 1st at approximately 9:00 PM on one of the islands in Lake Bunyonyi, located in Bufuka Village, Mwendo Parish, Kitumba Sub-County.




Ms. Mirembe and her boyfriend, Robert Hausvih, were staying in the area for the holiday season. While watching a football match with friends, Ms. Mirembe decided to swim in the lake. After a short time in the water, she exited but then immediately dived back in and did not resurface.




Mr. Hausvih and his friends entered the lake, located her, and pulled her out. Despite their attempts to administer first aid, she did not respond. They transported her to Rugarama Hospital, where she was pronounced dead on arrival.

The drowning was officially reported on Sunday at approximately 4:00 PM at Kabale Central Police Station. Officers responded to the scene, investigated, and documented the incident.

A postmortem examination was conducted at Rugarama Hospital in Kabale Municipality. Ms. Mirembe’s body was handed over to her relatives and transported to Mbarara for burial.
