The newly elected Won Nyaci (paramount chief) of the Lango Cultural Institution, Dr. Michael Moses Odongo Okune, rallied the Resident District Commissioners (RDCs) and Regional Chief Administrative Officers (RCCs) in the Lango sub-region to advocate for poverty eradication in their work. Dr. Odongo Okune delivered this message during a meeting with all RCCs, RDCs, Assistant RDCs, and Assistant RCCs at the Lango Cultural Institution in Senior Quarters. He confirmed his intention to work with all the RDCs to promote a culture based on socio-economic transformation to eradicate poverty from his chiefdom.
His Highness Dr. Odongo Okune stated that poverty is one of the biggest obstacles hindering progress.
“Poverty is the cause of 99 percent of the problems we are currently facing among our people in Lango and other places. Poverty leads to HIV/AIDS, marital desertion, land disputes, and other related problems,” Odongo Okune said.
“We should launch a common assault on our enemy, poverty,” he added, emphasizing that poverty is the biggest threat to the people at the moment.
He urged all RDCs and RCCs to disseminate President Museveni’s message of wealth creation and the four-hectare model farm initiative.
“Whether you hate Museveni or like him, one thing you cannot take away from him is his excellent message of the four-hectare model farm and economic transformation,” Dr. Odongo Okune said.
“Some of us survived HIV during our university days because of the message of His Excellency General Yoweri Kaguta Museveni,” he added.
He urged the RDCs to assist him with reconciliation efforts so that the Lango people can move forward as a united tribe.
Willy Omodo Omodo, the Speaker (Won Tok) of the council of Lango clan leaders/Lango Cultural Institution, commended His Excellency the President for appointing Pintu Ismail as the RDC of Lira district.
