Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital (MRRH) has welcomed a group of forty second-year Clinical Officer students from the Mayanja Memorial Medical Training Institute. These students are embarking on a practical training journey that spans approximately four weeks, during which they will rotate through various hospital units, including the Dental Unit, Ophthalmology, and the Ear, Nose, and Throat (ENT) Department. Their introduction to the hospital was facilitated by Ms. Dorothy Ajiambo, the Hospital Principal Clinical Officer (PCO) and the Supervisor of the Outpatients Department.
PCO Ajiambo expressed the department’s commitment to nurturing these aspiring medical professionals into dedicated caregivers capable of saving lives.
Dr. Celestine Barigye, the Director of Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital, emphasized the importance of upholding the principles of the Hippocratic oath. This ancient Greek code of ethics, attributed to the physician Hippocrates of Kos, outlines key principles such as beneficence, non-maleficence, justice, respect for patient autonomy, confidentiality, and veracity. Dr. Barigye stressed the need for truthfulness in patient interactions and cautioned against behaviors that contradict the calling of healthcare providers, reminding them that engaging in unethical activities is morally wrong.
He further advised the clinical medicine students to avoid any involvement in extortion and encouraged them to always wear clinical coats with clear identification. Mixing romantic interests with their hospital internship was strongly discouraged, with Dr. Barigye stating that their primary focus should be on acquiring knowledge and skills to save lives.
As a teaching center affiliated with Mbarara University of Science and Technology and other medical institutions in the region, Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital is dedicated to providing specialized healthcare services and fostering a culture of research and professional development.
