Internal Divisions and Corruption Threaten the NRM’s Survival, Warns Elder

During the Christmas season, on December 26th, 2024 (Boxing Day), I spent time in Nyarubungo Bukiiro Kashari, Mbarara District.

While interacting with local residents, an elderly gentleman (name withheld) shared his observations about the Obote, Amin, and current Museveni governments.

He began with Idi Amin, describing how the dictator’s harsh rule created an environment where those around him exploited the Ugandan population. Soldiers would seize people’s cows in plain sight, and any protest would be met with deadly force. Widespread rape went unpunished by the government. The people lived in fear of the soldiers, who were primarily seen as agents of terror and oppression. This rampant impunity and brutality significantly contributed to Amin’s downfall.

Regarding Milton Obote, the elder explained how the division of the UPC party into “UPC concentrated” (Enkomba) and “UPC diluted” (Efunguuro) factions sowed discord within the party, ultimately leading to its demise.

He acknowledged that the NRM, under President Museveni’s leadership, has made efforts to unite Ugandans regardless of tribe, religion, or socioeconomic status. He attributed this to the party’s longevity in power.

However, the elder expressed concern that some within the NRM are adopting the authoritarian tactics of their predecessors. He highlighted the growing issue of land grabbing by influential individuals who exploit their connections to seize land with impunity.

“Such impunity led to the downfall of Amin!” he emphasized.

Furthermore, he observed a worrying trend within the NRM, where some members claim to be more loyal or “true” NRM than others. This internal bickering, reminiscent of the UPC factions, is creating divisions and eroding grassroots support for the party.

“The level of corruption is alarming, with powerful individuals operating with impunity. These are the very people who will ultimately bring down the government,” the elder warned.

Having witnessed the reigns of Obote (both terms), Amin, and now Museveni, he believes that the NRM government is on a path to collapse if these pressing issues are not addressed urgently.
