Abed Bwanika Faces Scrutiny in NUP

Thursday, March 28, 2024

There has been significant discussion within the National Unity Platform (NUP) following the recent comments made by Abed Bwanika (Kimaanya-Kabonera) regarding his dissatisfaction with the party’s leadership and direction, which some perceive as him being sidelined within the party.

Dr. Kiiza Besigye commented on Bwanika’s remarks, suggesting that Bwanika’s intention to lead the country could undermine the NUP and play into President Museveni’s hands, creating divisions among opposition forces.

Besigye pointed out that Bwanika had previously challenged Museveni’s presidency in court in 2006, demonstrating a commitment to the opposition cause. However, Besigye cautioned against damaging the unity of the opposition, urging Bwanika to reconsider his stance.

Besigye’s comments were made during a discussion on Youtube and Radio Simba in Kampala, highlighting the significance of Bwanika’s statements within the political landscape.

Bwanika has expressed his intention to continue pushing for change within NUP, despite facing resistance from party officials. He plans to engage with party elders, including Lewis Rubongoya and Benjamin Katana, to address his concerns and effect reforms within the party.

Ssemakula Luttamaguzi (Nakaseke South) expressed solidarity with Bwanika, acknowledging his right to express dissent within the party. Luttamaguzi emphasized the importance of allowing individuals to voice their opinions without fear of reprisal, urging a more inclusive approach within NUP.

However, Bwanika maintains that he is not motivated by personal ambition but rather by a desire to see positive change within the party and the country at large. He acknowledges the challenges ahead but remains optimistic about the potential for progress.

It’s worth noting that Bwanika, a medical doctor by profession, has a long history of political involvement, having contested the presidency in 2001, 2006, and 2011. He is also a pastor and the founder of the Christ Witness Church in Ntinda.
