(Kampala) - Besigye Faces Court Martial Over Security and Firearms Charges

(Kampala) – Dr. Kizza Besigye, a four time presidential candidate, has been charged with offenses related to national security and unlawful possession of a firearm in proceedings before the General Court Martial in Kampala.

Dr. Kizza Besigye, a prominent opposition figure in Uganda, appeared before the General Court Martial chaired by Brig. Gen. Robert Freeman Mugabe, where he pleaded not guilty to charges concerning security violations and illegal possession of a firearm. Alongside him in the dock was Hadji Obeid Lutale, a trusted aide and confidant.

The prosecution accuses Besigye and Lutale of engaging in activities intended to threaten national security. Between October 2023 and November 2024, the pair, along with others reportedly still at large, are alleged to have convened meetings in Geneva, Switzerland; Athens, Greece; and Nairobi, Kenya. These meetings allegedly focused on soliciting logistical support and identifying military targets within Uganda, actions said to jeopardize the safety and integrity of the country’s defense forces.

Further allegations state that on November 16, 2024, while at Riverside Apartments in Nairobi, Kenya, Besigye and Lutale were found in possession of a pistol model 27KAL, number 765. The firearm is classified as property exclusive to the defense forces, and its possession by civilians is prohibited.

The court remanded Besigye until December 2, 2024, as investigations and preparations for the trial continue.
