In recent times, the Omukama's public engagements have been limited, with most activities confined to private functions within the palace walls.

The Bunyoro Kitara Kingdom has decided to extend the tenure of Andrew Byakutaga, the Kingdom’s Prime Minister, for another year, according to a letter dated June 27, 2024, signed by Dr. Fred Kabagambe Kaliisa, Chairman of the Royal Commission.

Kaliisa’s letter, addressed to Byakutaga, formalizes the decision made during a meeting held on June 24, 2024, at Karuzika Palace in Hoima. The Royal Commission unanimously agreed to grant Byakutaga an extension of his term as Prime Minister (Omuhikirwa) starting from July 1, 2024.

However, the extension has not been without controversy. Fred Mugenyi Ruchunya, the Kingdom’s Chief Prince, has voiced objections, claiming that such extensions of the Prime Minister’s term are unlawful.
