Kampala, Uganda – The Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) has officially nominated musician Sadat Mukiibi, known by his stage name Kalifah Aganaga, as its candidate for the upcoming Kawempe North Member of Parliament (MP) by-election.
The announcement was made during a press conference at the FDC headquarters in Najjanankumbi on Wednesday.
Aganaga, transitioning from a successful music career to politics, pledged to bring fresh energy and transformative leadership to Kawempe North. His campaign slogan, “Londa Kalifah Wetukire” (Vote for Kalifah for our betterment), emphasizes his commitment to grassroots development and youth empowerment.
Aganaga faces strong competition from several candidates, including ,Faridah Nambi (National Resistance Movement – NRM), daughter of NRM National Vice Chairman, Hajj Moses Kigongo, Hajjat Hanifah Karadi, an independent candidate leaning towards the NRM, Erias Luyimbazi Nalukoola (National Unity Platform – NUP), a prominent lawyer and others.
The Kawempe North by-election is scheduled for March 13, 2025, following the death of the area’s MP, Muhammad Ssegirinya, on January 9, 2025. Ssegirinya was a vocal opposition figure known for his advocacy on health and social justice issues.
FDC officials expressed confidence in Aganaga’s ability to retain the seat for the opposition, citing his strong connection with youth, community engagement, and public influence from his music career.
With the nomination period underway, the by-election is expected to be highly competitive, reflecting the political diversity and dynamic voter base of Kawempe North. Campaigns are anticipated to focus on issues such as service delivery, youth unemployment, and governance reform.
