Katonga Faction Honors Late Sarah Eperu Amidst Controversy

Friday, April 12, 2024

Members of the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) Katonga faction gathered at their offices in Kampala on April 11, 2024, to pay tribute to the late veteran activist, Sarah Eperu. Eperu passed away on Sunday at Life Link Hospital in Kyaliwajjala, marking the end of a significant chapter for the FDC community.

Dr. Kizza Besigye, the former FDC president, addressed the mourners, expressing his disappointment with the circumstances surrounding Eperu’s passing. He criticized those who allegedly took Eperu’s body from Mulago mortuary to Mengo without the consent of her relatives. Dr. Besigye emphasized the importance of supporting individuals while they are alive, rather than scrambling for their bodies after death.

Highlighting the challenges Eperu faced in her final moments, Dr. Besigye mentioned an incident where she was allegedly mistreated at the FDC headquarters. He condemned the reported arrest and mistreatment of her driver, leaving Eperu stranded at the headquarters. These revelations shed light on the struggles Eperu endured, further fueling the mourning and frustration within the FDC community.

Dr. Besigye’s remarks were echoed by Mr. Ben Eperu, a relative of the deceased, who expressed dismay over the handling of Eperu’s body. He recounted the confusion and distress experienced by the family when they discovered that Eperu’s body had been taken from Mulago Hospital Mortuary without their consent. Mr. Eperu questioned the actions of a group led by a Member of Parliament from Soroti, who allegedly took the body without proper authorization.

Adding to the confusion, Mr. John Kikonyogo, the spokesperson of FDC Najjanankumbi faction, provided insights into the discussions between the FDC leadership and Eperu’s family. He claimed that an agreement had been reached regarding the handling of Eperu’s body, including arrangements with A-Plus funeral home. However, discrepancies arose when another group intervened, causing uncertainty and frustration for all parties involved.

Despite the controversies surrounding Eperu’s passing, her family and loved ones laid a wreath on her casket at St. Jude Church in Naguru, Kampala, honoring her memory and legacy. As preparations continue for her final farewell, Eperu will be laid to rest in Kapil Village, Ngora District, tomorrow, marking the end of a chapter but leaving behind a legacy of activism and dedication within the FDC community.
