The Gulu City Woman MP, Betty Aol Ocan, has commended the Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Anita Annet Among, for wholeheartedly supporting the people of Northern Uganda, especially Gulu City, through corporate social responsibility initiatives.
She highlighted the construction of standard latrines at Pece Primary School and Pece Prison School, which will utilize solar energy. Additionally, Ocan mentioned the launch of Kaunda Ground fencing by Parliament on Tuesday and proposed that a small portion be designated as a memorial to Pope John Paul II, who visited Gulu in 1993 and spoke at Kaunda Ground.
Ocan also suggested the introduction of affordable domestic flights to Gulu to improve transportation for the people of the region. She expressed concern about 82 family members who are still awaiting compensation after being displaced due to the construction of logistic hubs. As a leader, she has been following the issue but has yet to see any progress in terms of payment.
Hon. Ojara Marthin Mpenduzi, the MP for Bardege-Layibi Division, informed the Parliamentary sitting at Kaunda Ground on Wednesday, August 28, 2024, that he had personally approached the Ministry of Works to inquire about when the affected people would receive their compensation. However, he was told that there were insufficient funds.
Ojara now seeks to include the concerns of the displaced people in the upcoming financial year’s budget. In response, Rt. Hon. Speaker Among directed Mr. Ojara to include the matter in his report so that Parliament can adopt it and allocate funds accordingly.
Ocan regretted that more people from Gulu and surrounding areas were not allowed to access Kaunda Ground during the Parliamentary session to witness firsthand how plenary sessions are conducted.
