MBARARA CITY – As the National Resistance Movement (NRM) gears up for its National Conference and the election of leaders into the Central Executive Committee (CEC), top party figures, including Captain Mike Mukula, the incumbent Eastern Region Vice Chairperson, are calling on delegates to exercise vigilance and wisdom in their choices.
The leadership elected at this juncture will play a pivotal role in shaping the party’s future, mobilization strategies, and its ability to retain the trust of Ugandans in upcoming elections.
In a strongly worded message, Muhumuza Jackson, a party mobilizer from Mbarara City, emphasized that the CEC is the “beating heart of the NRM’s political engine” and warned against electing leaders who lack the charisma, credibility, or political depth to steer the party through an increasingly competitive landscape.
His sentiments were echoed by Captain Mike Mukula, a seasoned NRM cadre, who stressed the need for delegates to prioritize competence over short-term gains.
Mukula: Leadership Must Inspire, Not Divide
Captain Mukula, a key figure in the NRM’s Eastern Region leadership, advised delegates to scrutinize candidates thoroughly. “The NRM needs leaders who can articulate its vision, mobilize grassroots support, and defend its legacy. We cannot afford to gamble with our future by electing individuals who cannot connect with the people or inspire confidence,” he said.
Mukula’s call aligns with growing concerns within the party that some candidates vying for CEC positions lack the necessary skills to galvanize support, potentially weakening the NRM’s grip on power.
Other influential cadres, including Government Chief Whip Denis Hamson Obua and NRM Secretary General Richard Todwong, have similarly urged delegates to reject monetary inducements and instead vote for leaders with a proven track record of service and sacrifice.
A Warning Against Complacency
The NRM’s leadership elections come at a critical time, with Uganda’s political dynamics shifting and opposition forces gaining momentum. Muhumuza’s message underscored the high stakes: “A single wrong choice at the top can have lasting consequences. Leadership must never be auctioned to the highest bidder.”
Delegates have been reminded that the NRM’s continued dominance depends on electing leaders who can effectively communicate the party’s agenda, rally support, and counter opposition narratives.
As the National Conference approaches, the rallying cry is clear: Vote wisely, for the future of the NRM and Uganda hangs in the balance.
