(Abim) – During his countrywide tour, National Unity Platform (NUP) leader Bobi Wine made a striking claim about Abim Hospital in Northern Uganda. On November 8, 2024, while addressing his supporters in Abim District, he accused the government of installing new hospital beds the night before his visit, suggesting that the improvements were made purely for show.
According to Bobi Wine, when news spread that he was scheduled to visit the hospital with a large media presence, the government quickly took action to improve the hospital’s facilities. He stated, “And when they heard that Bobi Wine is coming to see Abim hospital with so many cameras, yesterday (Thursday) in the night they put new beds in the hospital.”
The accusation was aimed at drawing attention to what he described as a pattern of deceptive actions by the government to create an illusion of progress, especially when high profile figures like himself visit public institutions. Bobi Wine, a vocal critic of the current government, has previously highlighted issues with the country’s healthcare system, citing insufficient resources and poor infrastructure in various hospitals.
Bobi Wine’s comments came as part of his ongoing NUP Countrywide Tour, where he is engaging with supporters and highlighting the alleged shortcomings of the government. Following his visit to Abim, Bobi Wine and his team moved on to their next stop in Soroti, continuing their efforts to mobilize and raise awareness about his party’s platform.
While the government has yet to respond to these specific claims, the incident at Abim Hospital does indeed reflect broader criticisms of the state of public health services in Uganda.
