David Lewis Rubongoya, Secretary General of Uganda’s National Unity Platform (NUP), has publicly called for the release of a controversial figure amidst mounting political tension. Henry Burora, formerly known for his harsh stance against opposition activists during his tenure as RCC, has become the center of attention due to what Rubongoya describes as illegal detention and violations by the current regime.

In a statement issued on social media under the hashtag #FreeBurora, Rubongoya acknowledged Burora’s history of antagonizing the opposition, yet emphasized the broader principle of justice. “Injustice against one is injustice against all,” Rubongoya declared, highlighting the party’s stance on human rights and civil liberties.

Henry Burora, who once held a position as Regional Commissioner of Rubaga Division in Kampala, faced criticism for his handling of dissent and outspoken critics of government policies. Despite their history of clashes, Rubongoya’s call for Burora’s release underscores a shift in focus towards safeguarding civil liberties and opposing arbitrary arrests.

Many other critics have argued that Burora’s detention is symptomatic of broader crackdowns on dissenting voices.

The government has yet to issue an official response to Rubongoya’s statement, leaving the fate of Henry Burora uncertain amidst growing calls for transparency and due process.
