Elias Luyimbazi Nalukoola, the National Unity Platform (NUP) candidate, has emerged victorious in the Kawempe Division North parliamentary by-election, securing 17,764 votes in a decisive landslide victory.

The official results, announced by the Electoral Commission, showed Nalukoola defeating his closest rival, Namabi Faridah Kigongo of the National Resistance Movement (NRM), who garnered 8,593 votes.

This by-election was triggered by the death of former MP Muhammad Ssegirinya, whose passing left the seat vacant. The tallying and announcement of results took place at Makerere University, which served as the official center for the election results.

Out of the 28,002 ballots issued, 27,596 were valid, while 406 were rejected, and 49 were spoiled. Returning Officer Henry Makabayi officially declared Nalukoola as the winner, confirming that he had received the highest number of votes in accordance with the Parliamentary Elections Act.

NUP’s Continued Dominance in Kampala:

The election results reinforced NUP’s strong presence in Kampala, where the party, led by Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu (Bobi Wine), has consistently outperformed the ruling NRM.

In his victory speech, Nalukoola dedicated his win to the late Ssegirinya and pledged to advocate for the rights of the people of Kawempe North. “This victory is not just mine—it belongs to the people of Kawempe North and the late Hon. Ssegirinya, who sacrificed so much for this community. I will continue his legacy and stand up for the people against oppression and injustice,” Nalukoola stated.
