Independent parliamentary candidate Rodney Mukula Akongel, who is contesting for the Soroti City East MP seat, has been hospitalized after developing a sudden illness while on the campaign trail.
According to initial reports, Akongel — a son of former NRM Vice Chairperson for Eastern Uganda Capt. Mike Mukula — collapsed on Monday evening while mobilizing support in the constituency. He was immediately rushed to Doctor’s Plaza Clinic in Soroti City, where medical personnel are working to stabilize his condition.
Sources close to the family and campaign team say early indications point to suspected poisoning, though medical officials have not yet issued a formal statement on the cause of his illness.
Akongel, one of the youthful frontrunners in the Soroti City East race, has been running a vigorous campaign in recent weeks. His message has centered on issues affecting ordinary citizens, positioning himself as a fresh and energetic alternative for voters.
Further updates on his condition and the ongoing investigations are expected as more information becomes available.
