Moroto, Uganda – The Secretary General of the National Resistance Movement (NRM), Rt. Hon. Richard Todwong, expressed his admiration for the remarkable economic progress in Karamoja, a region previously plagued by violence and poverty.
During his visit to Moroto district on Tuesday, Todwong highlighted the significant strides made in the region’s development, attributing it to the peace and stability ushered in by the NRM government.
“Karamoja was once known for violence, but today, due to the relative peace and stability brought by the NRM, the region is witnessing the establishment of numerous factories and businesses in mineral development, creating employment opportunities for local communities,” remarked SG Todwong.
Todwong went on to commend the exponential growth in Moroto district, citing increasing investments in agriculture, mining, tourism, and hospitality. He emphasized that this growth reflects the transformative vision set forth by President Yoweri Museveni since 1986.
The NRM Secretary General concluded a three-day mobilization tour in Karamoja alongside Hajjat Medina Naham, the Director of Finance and Administration, engaging with local leaders and community members.
Earlier in the tour, over 18 Members of Parliament from the region pledged their support for President Museveni as the NRM’s sole candidate in the upcoming 2026 elections. They lauded Museveni for his role in restoring peace and promoting inclusivity in northeastern Uganda.
“He has been like a parent to us, and endorsing his sole candidature for 2026 is our way of demonstrating our appreciation for his leadership,” the MPs affirmed during a meeting with Todwong.
During their visit, Todwong and his team also met with NRM supporters and elders in various villages (Manyattas), listening to their concerns and assuring them that their issues would be addressed through appropriate channels. They also visited government SEED schools, interacting with students and administration to assess educational needs.
At Moroto Central Market, Todwong engaged with traders, acknowledging their contributions to improving living standards in Moroto and across Karamoja. He announced a donation of Sh10 million from the NRM towards the traders’ Sacco, aimed at facilitating access to better interest loans and supporting business expansion.
In a gesture of support and gratitude, the Moroto Municipal Council decided to donate one acre of land for the construction of NRM regional offices. Mayor Ismail Muhammed handed over the land to SG Todwong, underscoring the council’s appreciation for the NRM’s longstanding leadership.
According to Mayor Muhammed, proper procedures will be followed to expedite the transfer of the land, ensuring swift development initiatives.
