Donald Trump, who frequently criticized Joe Biden’s age and fitness, may find these same arguments used against him now that Biden has ended his reelection bid. With Vice President Kamala Harris, 59, poised to become the Democratic nominee, Trump, at 78, will be a much older candidate facing increased scrutiny over any signs of decline.

Harris, a former senator from California, gained attention during the televised debates of her 2020 presidential campaign, even though it ultimately did not succeed. According to Matthew Foster, a political scientist at American University, the dynamics of the race have changed significantly with Biden’s exit.

Despite Biden’s withdrawal, Trump continued to question Biden’s mental acuity, suggesting on social media that Biden might forget he dropped out of the race. However, these comments might remind voters that Trump is not particularly young either. If Trump wins the November election, he will be the oldest American president to be sworn in.

Trump’s own public appearances have raised questions about his cognitive abilities. His acceptance speech at the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee, which came just five days after surviving an assassination attempt, was praised by his supporters as a testament to his endurance. However, some viewers noted that Trump seemed unusually tired and delivered a weaker speech than usual.

An ABC poll conducted in mid-July found that 60 percent of Americans believe Trump is too old to run for a second term. Despite these concerns, Trump has dismissed any issues regarding his age. In January, he claimed to have aced a cognitive test given by his doctor and assured supporters that he would notify them if he ever felt unfit.

Unlike his time in the White House, Trump is no longer subject to the same level of medical transparency. Over the past few years, little information about his health has been released. Last November, Trump published a brief letter from his doctor stating he was in good health and had lost weight, without specifying how much.

Harris’s campaign team became fully operational on Sunday and is still fine-tuning its strategy. However, it is clear that Trump’s age will be a point of attack. James Singer, a spokesman for Harris’s campaign, stated, “The Republican party has nominated Donald Trump, a 78-year-old convicted criminal who has spent decades screwing over working people.”

Foster believes Harris brings a different energy to her campaign, describing her style as younger and more aggressive. Harris, whose 2020 presidential campaign did not succeed, initially competed against Biden. Now, she is positioned to carry the torch forward.
