Otuke District, Uganda – With the arrival of the new political contender, Hon. Abong Jasper, the political landscape of Otuke Constituency has never been the same, now filled with tension.
For months, Jasper Abong has caused political unrest in Otuke County, as he has refused to step down in favor of anyone, both within the UPC political arena and with the general election looming.
In an exclusive interview on Friday from Otuke District, Abong made it clear that he is more than ready for the political battle in 2026. He emphasized that he is prepared to use his resources effectively to bring leadership to the people, and will not step down—even if influential figures attempt to block his candidacy.
Abong listed his notable contributions to the people of Otuke, which include organizing health camps targeting reproductive health issues like cervical cancer. Many people benefited from these camps, with several individuals being diagnosed and referred for treatment, funded in part by Abong’s personal money. His efforts have earned him a reputation as a caring and visionary leader, with his nickname, “Ojac,” being spoken daily in homes across the community. This reputation is a result of the numerous projects he has initiated, with more to come in 2025.
Abong is also recognized as one of the key figures behind the Acholi-Lango reconciliation peace-building initiative, which sparked a nationwide movement for reconciliation. His influence also led to the West Nile reconciliation prayers held in Koboko, and he played a significant role in the recent Ateker festival in Teso (Soroti), which promoted unity beyond Uganda, throughout East Africa, and across the continent.
One of the LC1 chairpersons who spoke to The Ankole Times noted that political tensions have risen in Otuke as UPC’s popular aspirant has made a significant return to the race, eyeing the Otuke County MP seat in 2026. This has created political challenges for some established candidates, including a major figure who may not return to Parliament.
In a bid to promote his political ambitions and work closely with the people of Otuke District, Mr. Abong Jasper, a dedicated UPC supporter, has outlined several aspects of his manifesto for the 2026 general elections.
His plans include economic empowerment through community sensitization, improving conditions for boda boda operators, market vendors, and others. Jasper emphasized that promoting sports activities for both men and women is a key agenda, as he looks to connect local clubs in Otuke District to national and international levels through talent identification and meaningful rewards.
Notably, his manifesto also includes the provision of clean water, particularly by repairing several broken-down boreholes in Otuke County. This initiative will include boreholes in schools, villages, and other institutions.
Abong has strong ties to the UPC leadership under Jimmy Michael Akena Obote and hopes that by 2026, the party will support him as an MP in the 12th Parliament of the Republic of Uganda, due to his political strategies and approach.
