Kampala, Uganda — Equity Bank Uganda has appointed seasoned banker Claver Serumaga as its new Executive Director, marking a strategic move to accelerate growth and deepen financial inclusion in Uganda’s commercial banking sector.
With over two decades of banking experience across Africa, Serumaga brings a wealth of expertise in commercial banking, digital transformation, and business development—critical areas for the bank’s next phase of expansion.
Before joining Equity Bank Uganda, Serumaga served as CEO of NCBA Bank Tanzania, where he was instrumental in strengthening operations in one of East Africa’s most competitive financial markets. Prior to that, he held leadership roles including Deputy Managing Director at Bank of Africa Kenya and Chief Digital Officer at Bank of Africa Group, where he led digital innovation efforts across 16 African countries. This track record places him among the continent’s foremost leaders in pan-African financial technology.
Serumaga also has deep ties to Uganda’s banking sector. Earlier in his career, he served as General Manager for Business Development at Bank of Africa Uganda, giving him direct insight into the local market and customer dynamics.

Serumaga’s academic credentials are equally impressive. He holds an MBA in Executive Management from the University of Cape Town, South Africa, and a Bachelor of Arts in Social Sciences from Makerere University in Kampala.
He is also a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Marketing (UK), highlighting his blend of technical banking expertise and strategic marketing insight.
As he steps into his new role, all eyes will be on how Claver Serumaga leverages his continental experience and digital-first approach to steer Equity Bank Uganda’s ambitions in a rapidly evolving financial landscape.
