(Entebbe) – Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba, Senior Presidential Adviser for Special Operations and Chief of Defence Forces, held a meeting with William Blick, a member of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), to explore youth opportunities in sports and human capital development.
During their discussion at the SFC Headquarters, both leaders focused on how sports can serve as a catalyst for growth and development among Uganda’s youth. Blick, who has been with the IOC since 2018, is notable for being only the second Ugandan to join the committee, following Maj Gen Francis Nyangweso. The IOC plays a significant role in promoting its vision of creating a better world through sports and emphasizes youth education through athletic participation. It is also responsible for overseeing the Olympic Games, the largest sporting event globally.
Gen Kainerugaba has been an advocate for sports as a vital aspect of national development. His support extends beyond mere encouragement; he has made substantial financial contributions to various sports initiatives. In 2021, he fully funded the expenses of the Ugandan national basketball team during the FIBA AfroBasket 2021 tournament held in Kigali, Rwanda. Additionally, in 2019, he donated Shs100 million for the construction of the Joshua Cheptegei Training Camp located in Teryet Sub-county, Kapchorwa District, demonstrating his commitment to enhancing the country’s sports infrastructure.
In a recent engagement in September, Gen Kainerugaba met with Mathias Kiwanuka, a former NFL player who is now back in Uganda to promote American football. During their meeting, Gen Kainerugaba expressed his intent to support Kiwanuka’s project, which aims to foster American football in Uganda. Kiwanuka is well known not only for his sports achievements but also as the grandson of Uganda’s first Prime Minister, Benedicto Kiwanuka. He has won two Super Bowl championships with the New York Giants.
