LIRA, Uganda – The Lira District Chairman, Mr. Okello Orik, has announced that the National Council of Sports has informed him that the site handover for the construction of the Akii Bua Olympic Stadium will take place on Monday, December 23, 2024, at 2:00 PM.
Mr. Orik made this announcement to the press at his office on Wednesday.
The Ugandan government recently signed a contract with the Egyptian firm, SAMCO National Construction Company, to construct a state-of-the-art 20,000-seat Akii Bua Olympic Stadium in Lira City.
The $129 million project is expected to be completed within 20 months. It will include a main stadium, training facilities, an indoor stadium, a swimming pool, outdoor courts, parking, and other essential infrastructure.
Mr. Okello Orik emphasized that this is a significant achievement for the Government of Uganda. The First Lady and Minister of Education and Sports, Hon. Janet Kataha Museveni, has already handed over the land title to the National Council of Sports.
Chairman Okello Orik noted that this date is a rescheduled event. He received communication that the original date was postponed to December 23rd due to Hon. Minister Peter Ogwang’s parliamentary engagements.
The Government of Uganda aims to boost sports development in the region and honor the legacy of Ugandan Olympic gold medalist John Akii Bua.
