US President Donald Trump is encountering backlash after it was revealed that he plans to meet with the current president of Syria, Ahmed al-Sharaa. This meeting is scheduled to occur during Trump’s upcoming visit to Saudi Arabia.
A Syrian source informed Israeli news agency i24NEWS that Trump will hold this meeting during his trip to Saudi Arabia in mid-May. Additional sources suggest that this planned encounter was facilitated through the mediation of Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt stated, “The president will be traveling to Saudi Arabia in May. Regarding specific dates and details, we will share that information with you as soon as we can.”
Nevertheless, this planned meeting with al-Sharaa has faced criticism from various individuals around the globe. It is important to mention that the current Syrian leader has a history as a former Al Qaeda affiliate. Given the historical animosity between the American public and the Islamist rebel group, critics believe that Trump’s meeting with al-Sharaa could be perceived as a betrayal to the American people, especially in light of the 9/11 attacks that resulted in the deaths of many Americans.
On the other hand, al-Sharaa appears to support American interests following the ousting of Syrian dictator Bashar Al Asaad. It remains to be seen what outcomes will arise from this meeting, as Trump aims to assist in stabilizing the tumultuous Middle Eastern region.
