US General Christopher Cavoli, NATO’s Supreme Allied Commander Europe, recently reassured the US Senate that Ukraine is not doomed to defeat in the ongoing war with Russia.
During a hearing of the US Senate Committee on Armed Services, Cavoli addressed concerns about Ukraine’s future, stating, “No, Senator, thank you for the question because I think it’s an important one.
There is nothing inevitable in war, and the Ukrainians are in very strong defensive positions right now and are improving weekly their ability to generate force and to reinforce those positions.”
When asked whether Ukraine was destined to lose the conflict, Cavoli responded that while it’s difficult to predict a successful major Ukrainian offensive that could fully reclaim all territory from Russian occupation, it’s equally hard to imagine Ukraine collapsing and losing the war. “I do not think there’s an inevitability to a Ukrainian loss,” he said.
Cavoli also highlighted the significant transformation of the Ukrainian military, noting that it has evolved “from a minuteman with a rifle to a really serious modern military force.”
The General’s remarks come amidst reports that the US may skip the upcoming meeting of the Ukraine Defence Contact Group, known as the Ramstein Format, which coordinates military support for Ukraine. The next Ramstein meeting, set to take place at NATO headquarters in Brussels, will be co-chaired by the UK and Germany.
Cavoli’s comments reflect a broader message of resilience for Ukraine, emphasizing its strong defensive position and growing military capabilities, despite the ongoing challenges of the war.
