United States Vice President JD Vance has claimed that if Russia’s war against Ukraine is not stopped in the near future, Ukraine will be unable to win. Speaking in a phone interview with right wing American commentator Charlie Kirk, Vance challenged the belief that prolonging the war would eventually lead to a Ukrainian victory and the full restoration of its territories.

Vance stated that it is unrealistic to expect that continued fighting for several more years would defeat the Russian invaders and allow Ukraine to return to the pre-war borders. According to him, this idea, though popular among some in the West, does not match the current situation on the ground.

The American Vice President also warned of serious consequences if the war continues for much longer. He referred to the risk of millions of deaths, the worsening of demographic decline in both Ukraine and Russia, and the possibility of nuclear escalation. He insisted that the administration of US President Donald Trump is committed to ending the conflict as soon as possible, stating that peace talks are underway and that everyone in the administration, including himself, is working towards that goal.

Vance added that the continuation of the war would be devastating and that peace must be prioritised. He confirmed that negotiations are now in full motion.

In recent developments, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky met with Trump in the Vatican. Zelensky described the meeting as symbolically important and potentially historic. However, Trump’s stance on Ukraine has raised concern in both Europe and Ukraine. His proposal to transfer four occupied Ukrainian regions—Luhansk, Donetsk, Zaporizhzhia, and Kherson—to Russia in exchange for a ceasefire has been widely condemned.

German Defence Minister Boris Pistorius strongly criticised the idea, saying that accepting such terms would amount to surrender. He warned that Ukraine should not agree to any territorial concessions. Meanwhile, the Financial Times has reported fears across Europe that Trump might pull out of peace negotiations entirely, further complicating the situation for Ukraine.
