The European Union has reaffirmed its unwavering support for Ukraine’s defence and sovereignty, even as fears grow that United States President Donald Trump may withdraw from ongoing peace negotiations between Kyiv and Moscow. The European Commission made clear that it remains committed to strengthening Ukraine both militarily and diplomatically, regardless of any shifts in American foreign policy.
European Commission spokeswoman Anitta Hipper addressed the issue during a press briefing in Brussels on Tuesday. When asked how the EU would respond if Trump pulls the US out of negotiations, Hipper stated that unity with allies remains essential and that supporting Ukraine is critical to send a clear message to all potential aggressors, especially the Russian dictatorship.
Hipper underlined that member states of the European Union have already allocated over 23 billion euros (approximately £19.7 billion) in military assistance to Ukraine this year alone. She added that more aid is being mobilised to ensure Ukraine is in a strong position both on the battlefield and at the negotiating table.
Her comments come amid growing concerns reported by the Financial Times that Trump may be preparing to step back from diplomatic efforts. One senior European official described Trump’s actions as a way of distancing the US from responsibility, leaving Ukraine and its European allies to manage the consequences of Russian aggression alone.
Despite such uncertainty, the EU has made it clear that it does not intend to scale back its commitments. Hipper emphasised that the stronger Ukraine becomes, the more credible its position will be in any future peace talks. Brussels insists that the defence of Ukraine is not just a Ukrainian cause but a fight for international law, stability and justice across Europe.
