A man and woman in Dnipro have been arrested by Ukraine’s Security Service (SBU) for preparing a series of terrorist attacks under orders from Russian forces. The couple, a 42 year old contract soldier and his 24 year old wife, allegedly set up six secret weapons caches containing homemade explosive devices and F1 grenades across Dnipro and surrounding areas.
Investigators say the Russians intended to later send another group of agents to collect the explosives and detonate them in public areas. The suspects were not only responsible for preparing these attacks, but also reported on sabotage carried out by other Russian collaborators, such as the arson of a local post office. The couple filmed the aftermath and sent a report to their handler via a messaging app, according to the SBU.
The man reportedly carried out subversive work during breaks from his military duties, while his wife was recruited by Russian agents through a Telegram channel. During their arrest, authorities found more explosives disguised as thermos flasks reinforced with screws, as well as phones and SIM cards used for encrypted communication with their Russian handler.
The suspects face serious charges under Ukraine’s Criminal Code: treason under martial law (Article 111 Part 2), illegal handling of ammunition or explosives (Article 263 Part 1), and unlawful production of explosive devices by a group of persons (Article 263-1 Part 2). Both are being held without bail and face life in prison if convicted. Their property is also subject to confiscation.
The SBU and the Dnipro regional military prosecutor’s office worked jointly on this successful counterterrorism operation to prevent further Kremlin backed violence on Ukrainian soil.
