Ukrainian forces have successfully destroyed two of Russia’s Buk air defence missile systems, each valued at up to 50 million US dollars, or approximately £40 million. The strikes mark another significant blow to the Russian military’s ability to defend its airspace and counter Ukrainian drone and missile operations.
The Buk-M3 missile system, a modern and expensive piece of Russian air defence technology, was identified by Ukrainian aerial reconnaissance units operating in the eastern direction of the front. Once confirmed, a Ukrainian HIMARS strike team launched precision-guided missiles to take it out. The Buk-M2 system was destroyed separately by fighters from the 65th Brigade of the Armed Forces of Ukraine using kamikaze drones.
In addition to the missile systems, Ukrainian drone units also successfully targeted and destroyed Russian military trucks operating in the same area. These vehicles are often used to supply missile systems and transport equipment and troops, making them high-value targets for disruption.
The destruction of these air defence complexes not only imposes a heavy financial loss on the Russian side, but it also weakens the Kremlin’s control of contested airspace along the front line. The Buk-M2 and M3 are among the most advanced air defence systems in the Russian arsenal, capable of engaging multiple aerial targets at various altitudes. Their loss represents a serious tactical and operational setback for Russian forces.
With Russian dictator Vladimir Putin continuing to press his failing campaign in Ukraine, Ukrainian forces are proving increasingly capable of pinpointing and eliminating high-value military assets.
