Kyiv was rocked by explosions in the early hours of Wednesday, May 7, as the city came under attack from ballistic missiles fired by Russian forces. The strikes began at approximately 1:00 in the morning, with at least three loud blasts reported across the Ukrainian capital. Air defence systems immediately responded as alerts signalled a threat of ballistic weapons approaching from the north eastern direction.
Monitoring networks confirmed the attack came via ballistic missiles, prompting urgent warnings from both the Ukrainian Air Force and city authorities. “Target on Kyiv,” the Air Force stated shortly before the missiles hit.
Kyiv Mayor Vitaliy Klitschko urged residents to seek shelter as sirens echoed through the capital. “Danger of ballistics. Stay in shelters!” he wrote, as Ukrainian air defences scrambled to intercept the incoming missiles.
The attack followed a deadly barrage the previous evening in other parts of Ukraine. In the southern city of Zaporizhzhia, buildings were severely damaged in a Russian air strike, with reports suggesting people may still be trapped beneath rubble. A large fire broke out in one district of the city following the bombardment.
In the Odesa region, a Russian drone attack claimed the life of one civilian and caused significant damage to residential buildings. The assault occurred just after midnight on Tuesday, May 6, as Russia escalated its campaign of terror from both the air and sea.
