Italy is preparing to send a major new military aid package to Ukraine that includes 400 M113 tracked armoured personnel carriers, along with advanced satellite surveillance capabilities. This development was first reported by respected Italian newspaper Il Messaggero, citing sources within the Italian government.

Italian Defence Minister Guido Crosetto has reportedly presented the eleventh aid package to the Committee on Public Safety, marking a significant expansion of Italy’s ongoing support for Ukraine’s defence against the Russian dictator’s invasion.

The bulk of the package consists of M113 armoured personnel carriers, designed to transport troops and be equipped with additional weapons. These vehicles have a solid record of use in combat situations and are valued for their versatility and reliability.

Ukraine has previously received similar Italian vehicles in 2024, including the VCC-2 model, a local Italian upgrade of the American-made M113A1. The VCC-2 is fitted with extra 6 millimetre armour plating on the sides for enhanced protection, along with viewing ports and firing embrasures that improve situational awareness and defensive capability.

Italy has an estimated 1,160 to 1,200 modernised M113A1 vehicles, which were converted into the VCC-2 version. This suggests Rome has ample capacity to provide Ukraine with armoured support while maintaining its own defence needs.

Each VCC-2 also features an open-style machine gun turret, offering better visibility and engagement range for the operator.

Beyond armoured vehicles, Italy’s package also includes a satellite surveillance system. This technology will enhance Ukraine’s ability to plan and carry out reconnaissance operations more effectively on the battlefield. Improved satellite imagery and real-time data are essential for coordinating defence strategies and tracking enemy movements.

Ukraine’s defence industry has also made progress in producing spare parts for American M113 carriers, which will further increase operational readiness and reduce logistical dependence.
